7trade Twin Range Filter: a filter line and a rest zone
Twin Range draws one line over the candles. It follows the price but stands still until the price moves far enough away from it. Around the line is the rest zone, and on the candles are marks of a side change, a broken signal and a pullback. After this article you will understand every element, the three views, the events for strategies and all the settings. How to turn the indicator on is covered in "7trade bot: introduction".
Why it is useful
The line ignores small price swings: while the closes stay inside the rest zone, it stands still. A move of the line means the price has really gone somewhere. This shows whether the market has a move and in which direction.
The indicator is adapted for binary options:
- new-mark threshold — on the right you can see at which close the indicator will change side;
- typical move per trade — how far the price usually travels during your trade;
- broken signal — a cross if the price came back beyond the line before a trade on the last mark would have ended;
- pullback to the line — a mark for entering along a side that has already formed;
- stagnation — the line turns grey when it stands for a long time.
Below is a live chart on real candles. Click it to open it large; there a click on the line, the zone or a mark shows an explanation. The ⚙ icon opens the settings window.
What is on the chart
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Line, green | The close stays above the line. The line can only follow the price |
| Line, red | The close went below the line. There is one continuous line: on the crossing bar it only changes colour |
| Line, grey | The line has stood for several bars in a row — stagnation. No move; marks in such a sideways market often break |
| Rest zone — the fill around the line | The line plus or minus its offset. While the closes stay inside, the line stands. A close above the zone pulls the line up, below it — down |
| New-mark threshold — an orange dotted line on the right | If the current candle closes beyond it, a new mark appears. A wick does not count. The tag, for example "▼ Short on a close below · −68 pt.", shows how many points are left |
| Typical move per trade — a grey dotted line | How far the close usually travels during a trade. A measure of distance, not a level. Only in the "All" view |
| below a candle | Long signal: the side changed to long — the price settled above the line and the line went up |
| above a candle | Short signal: the side changed to short |
| Signal broken: the price closed back beyond the line before a trade on the last mark would have ended. It stands on the same side of the candle as the broken mark | |
| below a candle | Pullback to the line from below: on the Long side the wick reached the line, while the close stayed above |
| above a candle | Pullback to the line from above: on the Short side the wick reached the line, while the close stayed below |
A mark comes not at the line crossing but when the side has formed: the price settled on the other side and the line went the same way. So a mark may stand a few bars after the crossing.
The line offset is the average close move per bar multiplied by a multiplier. It is calculated in two windows, fast and slow, and their average is taken. The ratio of the fast move to the slow one is the market pace: above one the market is speeding up, below one it is calming down. The pace is written in the state plate.
Hints
Click the line, the zone, a mark or the threshold to see a plate: what it is and what to do with it (a coloured dot and "CALL", "PUT", "Wait" or "Do not enter"). The plate stays until you click elsewhere. Under the line is the state of the last bar: the side and how old the mark is, whether the line is moving or standing, how far the next mark is in moves per trade, the market pace. To make the plate appear on a mouse hover too, turn on "Show the explanation on hover" in the "Panel view" section — it is off at the start.
Three views
The "What to show" switch in the "Panel view" section.
| View | What you see |
|---|---|
| Line | The line, the rest zone around it and the new-mark threshold on the right. No marks |
| Signals | The line, the threshold and the marks: signal, broken signal, pullback. No zone fill, so the marks read clearly on the candles. This is the starting setup |
| All | The rest zone, the threshold, the typical move per trade and all marks at once |
Events for strategies
In the "Strategies" window the events are listed with the prefix "Twin Range:".
| Event | When it fires | CALL / PUT |
|---|---|---|
| Long/Short signal | The indicator's side changed — the same bar as the or mark | Long / Short |
| side after the signal | State: where the indicator has been looking since its last mark. Holds until the next signal. No side before the first mark | Last was Long / Short |
| price and line together | State: the price is on its side of the line, and the line is going the same way. A soft confirmation — true on most bars | Price above, line rising / price below, line falling |
| price relative to the line | State: the close is above or below the line right now. Changes quickly — it is not a trend | Above / below |
| line turned | The line moved against its previous direction — once, on this bar. Almost always coincides with a signal | Up / down |
| signal just fired | On this bar the indicator changed side. It does not say which way: good as an "enter only right at the turn" filter | None |
| pullback to the line | The mark: the wick reached the line, the close stayed on its side | On the Long side / on the Short side |
| signal broken | The cross. The side is where the price went | Short broken / Long broken |
| line standing | State: the line has stood for at least as many bars as set in "Stagnation — from how many bars" | None |
| line moving | The other way round: the line has moved recently | None |
| market speeding up | State: in the fast window the price moves noticeably wider than in the slow one | None |
| market not speeding up | The other way round: the price moves as usual or quieter | None |
"Signal broken" answers with the side where the price went: a broken Long gives PUT. The "invert" checkbox of a strategy rule turns the side of the event the other way.
All settings
The window opens with the ⚙ icon — on the Twin Range card in the "Indicators" window or in the header of its panel below the chart. If the line is drawn over the candles — with the pencil in its line of the chart legend. While a strategy with Twin Range is running, the panel uses that strategy's settings, not the window's.
How to read
The first section is a reminder of the elements, the same as the table above. It has no settings.
Panel view
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| What to show | The view: "Line", "Signals" or "All" |
| Explain elements on click | The main switch for the plates |
| Show the explanation on hover | The plate follows the mouse. Off at the start so it does not cover the candles |
| Add the state to the plate | Lines about the last bar in a pinned plate |
Line
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Show the line | The line itself |
| Grey when standing | Paint grey the segments where the line has not moved |
| Stagnation — from how many bars | How many bars in a row the line must stand to count as standing. The same number decides the "line standing" and "line moving" events |
Rest zone
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Zone fill | The fill around the line |
Thresholds and move
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| New-mark threshold | The orange dotted line on the right |
| Typical move per trade | The grey dotted line above and below the price |
| Tags on the right | Captions: how many points to the threshold and what the typical move is |
| Expiry, bars | Trade length in bars. On M1 a bar is a minute: 3 is a three-minute trade. It also decides whether a signal is broken |
| Typical move — over how many bars | Over how many recent bars the typical move per trade is calculated |
Set "Expiry, bars" to the same time as the trades in your strategy: both the broken-signal cross and the "signal broken" event depend on it.
Marks
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Signal | Side change marks |
| Signal broken | Broken signal crosses |
| Pullback to the line | Pullback rhombs |
Fast offset and Slow offset
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Fast window, bars | Over how many bars the price move is averaged in the fast window. 27 at the start |
| Fast multiplier | How many average moves away the fast offset is. More — the line is farther from the price, moves less often, fewer marks. 1.6 at the start |
| Slow window, bars | The same for the slow window. It usually decides the warm-up: at 55 the first line appears on bar 56. 55 at the start |
| Slow multiplier | 2 at the start |
Presets
| Preset | What it sets |
|---|---|
| 1-min trade | The typical move and the broken signal over one bar |
| 3-min trade | Over three bars — the starting setup |
| 5-min trade | Over five bars: the move per trade is larger, and a signal has more time to break |
| More signals | Multipliers 1.2 and 1.6: the line is closer to the price, more marks, but they break more often |
| Fewer signals | Multipliers 2 and 2.5: the line is farther from the price, fewer marks, longer stagnation |
Legend
All colours in one list; each can be changed. Here is also the button that returns all settings to the starting ones.
What Twin Range does not do
- It does not know the future. A mark means the side has already changed, not that the price will keep going that way.
- It does not enter trades by itself. Trades are opened by a strategy from the "Strategies" window.
- It does not put a mark at the crossing. The mark comes when the side has formed — sometimes a few bars later.
- It does not redraw the past. A mark on a closed candle stays where it is. A broken-signal cross appears later than the mark — when the price comes back beyond the line.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the line not move for a long time? The closes stay inside the rest zone. The line moves when a close goes beyond the edge of the zone.
The price crossed the line, but there is no mark. A mark comes when the price has settled on the other side and the line has gone the same way. One crossing is not enough.
What does a cross next to a mark mean? The signal is broken: the price came back beyond the line before a trade on this mark would have ended.
Why is there no line at the start of the chart? The indicator needs to fill the slow window — 55 bars at the start.
